Over the last few weeks, Year 4 have been learning all about what makes a great speech. They were then set a task by Mrs. Suffield to help her decide whether she should move her family to Queen’s Hill or the centre of Norwich. Y4 have been working incredibly hard to collate their ideas and come up with a convincing argument for why Queen’s Hill is the best place to live. This afternoon, Y4 gathered in the hall to present their speeches to Mrs. Suffield.

Y4 Royal Norfolk Show
Year 4 had a fabulous day at the Royal Norfolk Show today. They all began in the Discovery Zone, learning about the production of sugar beet in Norfolk, from preparing the soil all the way to what the sugar is used for. They were challenged to build the tallest possible tower of sugar cubes!
The children also enjoyed exploring many of the other attractions, collecting stickers and seeing how many freebies they could gather!
The highlight of the day for many was seeing the RAF Falcons parachuting display over the Grand Ring!
Y4 Geography
As part of our continuing geography topic looking at our local area, Year 4 went on a walking tour of Queen’s Hill this afternoon to assess whether the quality of the environment improved the closer they got to the woodland area. They rated 8 different streets on their appearance, safety, cleanliness and proximity to amenities.
School Council – Menu tasting
Children from school council were given the opportunity to taste a variety of food items and give their opinions on them. This was to help Nikki and the kitchen team think about developing the lunch menu going forward.
A great time was had by all and the feedback given by the children was invaluable. Favourites included a chicken burger, gammon steak and a new curry recipe!
Y4 String Telephones
Year 4 explored how to make the best string telephone by testing different sizes of cups to see which gave the clearest sound. We also investigated the possibility of ‘eavesdropping’ into others’ conversations.Â
Year 4 Litter Pick
Year 4 considered both the positive and the negative impact that humans can have on the environment. We discussed the different types of litter and how some litter will decompose compared to other litter which will not. We then conducted a litter pick in our local area to see what type of litter was most commonly dropped.
We found that cigarettes were the most common type of litter however there were lots of plastic packets and plastic pieces also found. The least common was organic, compostable litter. We have set up an experiment, using the litter we found, to see how the three types of litter will break down (decompose) over time.
Year 4 – Mad Science
Year 4 kicked off their brand new science topic with a bang this morning as Mad Science led a fantastic workshop.
They learnt all about static electricity through the use of a Van de Graaff generator, which raised a few hairs!
Children were introduced to the terms ‘conductor’ and ‘insulator’ and used themselves as a pathway to allow electricity to flow and light up a bulb!
A big thanks to Mad Science for such an informative and engaging workshop this morning. We can’t wait to find out more about electricity over this half term!
School Council Christmas Bauble Project
Back in November, the School Council decided to buy every child a clear bauble to design and decorate ready for Christmas. Each year group chose their own designs and have been busy over the last few weeks creating them.
In Year 1, children filled their baubles with Christmas sequins and they decorated the outside.
In Year 2, children turned their baubles into reindeer and used them to decorate the Christmas trees in their classrooms!
In Year 3, the children turned their baubles into snow globes, complete with snowmen inside.
In Year 4, the children used lots of glitter and glue to decorate the outside of their baubles.
In Year 5, they used tissue paper and glue to create a textured bauble which they filled with yummy treats!
And finally, in Year 6, the children filled the inside of the baubles with glitter, then used white pen to create patters on the outside.
We think they all look amazing! A great big thank you to the School Council for organising this for everyone.
Year 4 Christmas Art
This week, Year 4 have enjoyed getting into the Christmas spirit by creating their own Northern Lights artwork.
They used chalks to create the colourful light display in the sky and the snow beneath.
Finally, they added splashes of white paint to create the effect of snow.
We think they all look stunning!
Year 4 Roman Catapults
This week, Year 4 have been learning about the history of the catapult and have made their own version of Roman style catapults.
They used their measuring skills to measure the wood accurately, then used junior hacksaws to cut the wood to the correct lengths. Next, they used hot glue guns to join all of their pieces together, complete with elastic bands to create the tension.
Each class then had an opportunity to try out their catapults against mini figurines. A great time was had by all!
We are so proud of all the teamwork and grit and determination that was shown throughout the week.
