Year 6 carried out a Science investigation to discover how the size of an object’s shadow depends on the distance between the light source and the object. Before the investigation, children made a prediction, explained the method, noted the apparatus needed and drew scientific diagrams. They then drew up a results table and used this to plot a graph to show their findings as well as writing a conclusion.
What did we find out?
The size of the object’s shadow increases as the distance between the light source and the object decreases. This is because light
travels in straight lines, so objects closer to the light source block light travelling in a greater range of different directions. As a wide light source moves towards an object, the shadow’s edges become less sharp (as it actually consists of overlapping shadows due to different parts of the light source). We only changed one variable to make it a fair test.
This half term Y5 have been exploring different forces and how these act upon objects. This week we focused on the force – air resistance. Children were set the task to redesign a parachute for the Super Skydiving Company. Children made and tested three parachutes to see which type of parachute falls the slowest creating the most air resistance.
Year 6 have produced some wonderful double-page spreads to celebrate all of their hard work in History over the Autumn term. Children collated a range of different ideas under subheadings to show their understanding, including: rationing, the role of women, key dates and countries involved and VE Day. Thanks to the friends of QHPS for organising an amazing winter fair this evening. It bought festive cheer to us all on a cold Friday afternoon!
A year of practicing finally paid of in such a spectacular way!
Y5 performed at the #WeWill Sing concert, held at Orminston Victory Academy. They performed three songs and not only did then have to learn the words they also performed the songs in BSL ensuring inclusivity to all.
We are so proud of Y5 for their dedication to this project and thank #WeWill Sing for the opportunity to preform and raise money for such worthy causes.
Year 6 made their very own periscopes today as part of their learning about light and reflection. They used mirrors in their periscope and observed how the mirrors in the periscope reflected the light to enable them to see an image of an object around a corner or over the top of another object. Grit and determination were needed as well as independence and concentration whilst following the instructions!
Well done to the Y3/4 children who attended the World Cup themed football event today at the Nest.
We had a wonderful day working together in our year group and also meeting up with our Y2 ‘Buddy Classes’. As a year group we looked at what the word ‘bullying’ means and acted through scenarios so that we could better understand how bullying can effect our mental-wellbeing.
We read the story ‘Emmanuel’s Dream,’ which is a true story about the boy Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah. The children wrote a letter to Emmanuel explaining how he has inspired them and what they will do to make others with physical disabilities feel accepted.
In the afternoon, we met up with our buddy classes and made our very own sock puppets. The children were incredibly creative and loved adding on the sequin and glitter details.
We were lucky to attend an event run by Sir Isaac Newton Sixth Form, to show children how fun and exciting maths can be! The children were engaged in the activities on offer: an origami masterclass, alien times table games, maths challenges, life-sized space battleships, and talks on planets, rocketships and astronauts by experts in each field. Children were also gifted a goody bag filled with stationary, bookmarks and additional activity booklets to continue the maths fun at home.
