Congratulations to all in Year 6 for finishing your SATs! You have all worked incredibly hard and we are all very proud of the effort and determination you have put into your work building up to this week!
We hope you enjoyed your well earned ice-lolly and cinema afternoon!
To end science week, we spent the afternoon making a non-Newtonian fluid called Oobleck! This fluid is either liquid or solid, depending on the pressure you put on it. The children got into small groups and slowly added water to cornflour until their fluid was the correct consistency.
Year 6 have been exploring Shaun Tan’s graphic novel, ‘The Arrival’. The children have loved discussing the running themes of tolerance, respect and migration. We have had some really insightful conversations about these themes and have related them to the world we live in today.
We unpicked this famous quote by Tan:
‘Even the most anonymous character, in the strangest situation, is familiar to us if we are allowed to know his feelings, and so be invited to walk for a moment in his shoes’
We can’t wait to read the children’s informal letters this week, watch this space!
A letter with useful websites will be sent home today alongside your child’s reports. Here are the links to those websites:
IXL have separate pages of skills linked to individual Year group. The Y6 page has links to practise both English and Maths skills. Pages are then split into skills of which has a practise question for the children to think about.
BBC Education have produced a whole host of materials for KS2. Follow the KS2 link and then select either Maths or English. Each area usually has an information section for reading, plus an activity and then quiz which is marked online. Some aspects require a subscription.
Children from Year 6 bravely represented Queen’s Hill Primary School at a recent mathematics competition. They worked in pairs, completing 3 different activities in 15 minute blocks, which also included the added twist of running between questions. They didn’t crumble under the pressure, they stood tall and made Queen’s Hill proud.
In fact we were so proud of them that we stopped off for ice cream to celebrate.
Year 6 have been learning about forces – we have been investigating air and water resistance. Today we had great fun testing our designs! Lily just pipped Luigi to the post with her light, streamlined design. Many of our boats needed modifications but it was a fantastic learning experience.
Try these simple relaxation and mindfulness activities together and help your child learn to calm down when they feel stressed or anxious. Follow this link to access the resource: https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbeebies/joinin/seven-techniques-for-helping-kids-keep-calm
The week we have been inspired by Luke Temple’s writing workshops. In these pictures we are creating our own mutating mansions. We are really looking forward to writing some amazing stories!
